Grant Description
Grants to USA, Canada, and International nonprofit organizations for a range of projects that advance understanding of Japan throughout the world. Eligible proposal categories include cultural programs, seminars and symposia, research programs, and programs to develop future experts who will promote international understanding of Japan.

TIFO supports projects that promote understanding of Japan, and divides them into the following four categories:

  1. Symposia and seminars that promote international understanding of Japan
  2. Cultural programs that promote international understanding of Japan
  3. Research and studies that promote international understanding of Japan
  4. Programs to foster future experts who will contribute to promoting international understanding of Japan

Eligible Projects:

  1. Projects that meet TIFO's objectives and the above mentioned project categories for grant. The project should deepen understanding of Japan, especially overseas.
  2. Projects, or a discrete part of a continuing project, that can be completed within one fiscal year (April 1st of one year to March 31st of the following year).

The grant can be used for a wide range of project-related purposes. For example, regarding symposiums, venue fees, material preparation costs, speakers' travel costs including airfare, accommodation expenses, honoraria for speakers, networking meeting expenses, etc. are included. In the case of research and studies category, various related expenses such as material production costs, communication costs, printing costs, etc. are covered. However, indirect expenses such as personnel salaries and office rent are not included. At the time of application, please state the total project cost and the breakdown (approximate amount) that will be the basis of the desired amount of grant.


Additional Eligibility Criteria
Eligible applicants:
- Non-profit organizations
- Organizations that have or will have a bank account in its officially registered name for the remittance of grant.

Applications from individuals for individual purposes are not accepted. But you may apply as a representative of the project promoted by your organization, or the team to which you belong.

Applications from companies or business entities with commercial purposes are basically ineligible.

- Applications from individuals
- Application for a lump-sum grant for the same project over a period of more than three years.
- Application for expenses to stay in Japan for an extended period

Pre-Application Information
October 1st to November 30th (deadline), 2023 (both Japan time)

Applications may concentrate in the last week in November, in which case they may not be able to respond to any possible inquiries in a timely manner. You are kindly recommended to submit (upload) the application with sufficient time before the application deadline.

Grant Calender (Outline)
- 1st October to 30th November: Application Period
- February: Selection of grant candidates by Selection Committee
- March: Approval by Board of Trustees; Notification of selection results
- April: Submission of Letter of Agreement and Actual Project Plan
- ~March: Project implementation; Submission of Project Report


Estimated Size of Grant
The average grant amount varies greatly depending on the project content, but the approximate amount is several hundred thousand to 1.5 million Japanese yen.

Term of Contract
You may apply a project that spans over multiple years. However, even if the grant is awarded in the first year, it is applicable for the first year only. You are requested to submit an application again in the following year and afterward, to go through the same evaluation process for grant as in the first year.

For multi-year projects of up to three years duration, apply every year. The Selection Committee will evaluate the project each year and decide whether or not TIFO will continue to extend support.

Applicants who have received support for three consecutive years become ineligible to receive support for a fourth year under the same program.
