Deadline Date:

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $5,000 to USA nonprofit organizations for programs that benefit animals and their caregivers. Applicants must submit a letter of introduction prior to submitting a full application. Funding is intended to provide support to organizations that work with animals to continue their work, help them offer additional services, or expand their reach to the animals who most critically need their help.

Currently, many of the grants are focused on assisting senior companion animals, whether it be assisting with their food, care, veterinary costs, or need for adoption.

Generally, DDAF approves programs that are devoted more directly to the animals and that demonstrate the greatest or most urgent need. DDAF generally funds spay/neuter programs, special needs programs, senior care programs, medical expenses for senior animals, rescue and placement of senior animals, and pet food pantries.

On occasion, grants have been funded for therapy dogs in hospice situations, training of assistance dogs, wildlife rehabilitation, protective vests for police dogs, education programs, and even a scholarship in the field of veterinary medicine.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Very few of the grants exceed $5,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. Difficulties in complying with Federal regulations prevent DDAF from making donations to individuals, non-U.S. charities, or for-profit organizations.

DDAF customarily does not fund capital projects.

Pre-Application Information:

The first step in applying for a grant is to send a letter of introduction on your group letterhead and with an original signature by an authorized representative. Letters of Introduction will be accepted only the first month of each quarter (January, April, July, and October). Immediately after that, they will be reviewed and possible grant recipients will receive grant applications for completion.

The LOI can be emailed as a PDF or image attachment. Email is the preferred method of communication, but LOIs can be mailed via USPS as well.

Grant decisions are made each quarter with deadlines on March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31. After you receive acknowledgement of your letter of introduction, you will hear from the Foundation only if your project is selected to submit a grant application.

If everything is in order with your application, and depending upon the timing of your grant submission, the process can take anywhere from three to six months.
