Grants to Michigan nonprofit organizations for projects that benefit Jewish females and their families. Applicants must submit a letter of intent prior to submitting a full application. Eligible projects should promote social change that will benefit the community, and will address the root causes of challenges to Jewish girls and women and their families. JWF values projects with an advocacy component that benefits the Jewish community, and encourages collaborative efforts among organizations requesting funds for projects.

Single Year Grants:

  • JWF considers projects for single-year funding on a year-to-year basis. 
  • JWF will consider the extent to which Jewish women and girls hold leadership, board and advisory committee, policy making and key staff positions in the requesting organization.
  • JWF values and encourages collaborative efforts among organizations requesting funds for projects.

Challenge Grants: 

  • A grant applicant may submit a Letter of Intent for a single year Challenge Grant for any project.
  • The Challenge Grant will match new funds raised by the Grantee during the grant period that are specifically earmarked for the Challenge Grant project.

The Alfred and Sandra Sherman JWF Women’s Health Grant: 

  • One grant will be awarded for a women’s health lecture or women’s health project.

Although there is no predetermined number of grants, at least one grant will be awarded each year.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Single year grants: Up to a maximum of $20,000
- Challenge Grant: The maximum amount of the Challenge Grant award is $20,000. The Challenge Grant will not exceed a “dollar for dollar” match (100%).
- The Alfred and Sandra Sherman JWF Women’s Health Grant: Up to $10,000

Term of Contract:

- The Grant Period for the 2020 Single Year Grant is July 2020 through September 2021.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Jewish Women’s Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit (JWF) is currently accepting Letters of Intent for its 2020 Grant Cycle from organizations located within the State of Michigan.

- Organization must have their own IRS 501(c)(3) designations or use a fiscal agent with IRS 501(c)(3) designation.
- The JWF funds with a “gender lens” and a “Jewish lens”. They are interested in projects that benefit Jewish women and/or girls and their families. They seek projects that address the root causes of challenges to them and their families and promote sustainable or systemic social change that benefits the community. Gender lens funding does not exclude men and boys. For more information, see FAQs link in Pre-Application Information below.
- Grant requests are for programs, projects or initiatives that take place Michigan.
- JWF values projects with an advocacy component that benefits the Jewish community.
- JWF values and encourage collaborative efforts among organizations requesting funds for projects.
- JWF will only accept Letters of Intent from International organizations that have been invited to submit a Letter of Intent.
- If your organization has received two consecutive grants from the JWF for the same program, you may only apply for a Challenge Grant for the third and final year of a funding.

- JWF does not award grants to individuals, make individual loans, provide individual scholarships or award tuition reimbursements.
- JWF does not fund political campaigns, political organizations or PAC’s.
- JWF does not purchase tickets/tables for special events.
- JWF does not participate in capital campaigns.

2020 Grants Process Timeline
- Deadline for Letters of Intent: 12:00pm (noon), Monday, January 31, 2020
- Notification to all Applicants: By Monday, March 9, 2020
- Deadline for Full Proposals: 12:00pm (noon), Tuesday, April 7, 2020
- Site Visits for Full Proposals: Throughout May 2020
- Grant Awards Announced: By Tuesday, June 30, 2020

The JWF only accepts Letters of Intent outlining fully planned projects. Please take the time to review the JWF Guidelines thoroughly to determine if your organization, program, project or initiative meets the JWF’s criteria. Grant seekers are encouraged to call or email the staff to discuss the appropriateness of requests prior to submitting Letters of Intent. All Letters of Intent must be submitted on time.

The Jewish Women’s Foundation uses an online grant request system, GIFTS Online. All Letters of Intent and Full Grant Proposals must be submitted electronically to be considered for the 2020 grant cycle.

Following the Letter of Intent phase, JWF will notify those organizations who have been approved to submit a Full Proposal.

Challenge Grants: Challenge Grant disbursements will be made semi-annually, as the Grantee raises and earmarks dollars. Disbursements are contingent on documentation verifying new dollars raised during the grant period that are earmarked for the Challenge Grant project.
