Grants to USA intermediate, high school, and community college math and science teachers to attend a professional training program. Teachers will participate in a six-week study period in a laboratory facility, where they will engage in problem solving of research issues and in the development of a science lesson plan.

RET stands for Research Experience for Teachers and is a wonderful professional development opportunity for math and science teachers funded by the National Science Foundation.

Team-RET provides middle school, high school and community college math and science teachers with an intense, six-week period of in-depth study at the CCMR (Cornell Center for Materials Research) laboratories with facility managers, faculty, and graduate students.

In the Team-RET program, five select science teachers spend the first five weeks primarily in the CCMR Shared Facilities. They work together as a team to understand how the equipment in the facility works and to solve research problems set out by the facility manager. The sixth week is dedicated to developing a materials science-related lesson plan based on their experience in the facilities.

An Independent-RET program will be offered this summer as well. This opportunity is only available to teachers who have completed the  CCMR Team-RET program.

Teachers in the Team-RET program will spend time in the following CCMR facilities as well as other research facilities across campus:

  • X-Ray Diffraction Facility
  • Integrated Advanced Microscopy Facilities
  • Materials Research Support Facility
  • Polymer Characterization Facility
